Parents teaching child about finances

It’s absolutely essential to teach children how to manage the money they have and how to invest it in the future. This article covers Spending (wants vs. needs), Saving, and Investing

3 children playing around giant money jars labeled "spending", "saving", and "giving"

The 3 jar system is a popular way to begin teaching children how to budget. With this system, you give your child three clear jars, each representing a different fund: spending, saving, and giving. The child will then divide their money into the jars with your guidance.

Budgeting their money in this way teaches children to actively plan for their current and future wants. Encourage your child to stick to their budget.

If they fall short in one category, the goal is to help the child modify their behavior or budget instead of pulling from another jar.

For example, if your child would like to spend more money than they have in the spending jar, they should re-prioritize their wants, earn more money, or rethink their budget instead of pulling from the saving or giving jars.

Enjoy an extra .75% APY* when you open a Youth CD for only $50! CDs are offered in 12, 24, and 48 month terms. Watch your balance grow as dividends are paid out monthly.

Person looking at CD growth

Looking for a safe way to grow your savings? Consider a CD. If you’re willing to wait, a CD or share certificate can be a great way to earn a high interest rate on the money you deposit. But first, what is a certificate of deposit and how does it work? Let’s explore the basics.

Gold bars buried underground

It’s exciting to dream about how you’ll spend your money (when you have some). Brainstorming a list of savings goals is typically less inspiring. But really, the two go hand-in-hand. Without money in savings, it’s hard to make your wish-list expenses come true.
